An own-goal by Gabriel Heinze in the 11th minute put Argentina behind and the home side were forced to play a man down for the last hour when striker Tevez was shown red for fouling Dario Veron.

But Sergio Aguero equalized in the 61st minute.

The draw leaves Paraguay on 14 points, two more than second-placed Argentina.

Argentina started strongly, including a free kick from Juan Roman Riquelme that hit the crossbar in the 7th.

But Paraguay went ahead as goalkeeper Roberto Abbondanzieri left his line too late and a desperate header from Heinze couldn't keep Nelson Haedo Valdez's effort out.

Abbondanzieri suffered a cut to his knee and was replaced by Juan Pablo Carrizo.

Argentina coach Alfio Basile sent on two strikers in an attempt to get something out of the match -- including Aguero, who slotted home a deft cross from Lionel Messi.

Tevez will be ineligible for the team's match in Peru on Wednesday. On Tuesday, Paraguay host Venezuela.

Uruguay moved up to third in the group table with a 1-0 victory away to Colobia, Eguren scoring in the 15th minute.

Bolivia are bottom after crashing 3-1 to Ecuador, Peur climbing off the foot of the table with a 1-0 victory over Venezuela.

Clint Dempsey scored from Brian Ching's pass in the 40th minute to give the United States a 1-0 victory in Cuba and put them top of their qualifying group. .

"The pitch wasn't the best, and we had some problems with the heat," said US goalkeeper Tim Howard. "This is the third straight qualifying win on the road for us and that will do wonders to building up our confidence."

Trinidad and Tobago moved to second in the group - the top two from each of three groups advances to next year's final round - with a 1-1 draw at Guatemala with Keon Daniel's goal in the 84th minute matched by Carlos Santizo in the 90th.

Mexico seized the Group Two lead with a 3-0 home victory over Jamaica in a match moved from the Caribbean because of hurricane threats.
