Indonesia's founding farther and first president, Sukarno, has long
been regarded as a symbol of national unity under political repression.
At the 31st anniversary of his death, tens of thousands have visited
the gravesite to commemorate his legacy -- a revolutionary fighter
who ousted Dutch colonialists, a charismatic leader who united a
nation through the sheer will of his personality.
But many also remember him as the man who drove Indonesia into grinding
poverty and gutted the country's political institutions, dissolving
parliament and appointing himself "President-for-Life."
Sukarno’s mismanagement resulted in a military takeover and led the nation to 33 years of political repression by a general named Suharto.
