From repression to resistance

Aceh, Indonesia

Separatist rebels in Aceh are on the verge of signing a peace deal with the Indonesian government to end 26 years of fighting that has left thousands dead.

Efforts by President Megawati Sukarnoputri to restore law and order have until now amounted to little and the resource-rich northern province has long been considered as Indonesia's ticking time bomb.
