Signifying the final chapter of colonialism, Britain returned Hong Kong's
sovereignty to China on July 1, 1997.

systems," Hong Kong embarked upon the experiment of the 21st century --
capitalism under the world's biggest communist regime.
More than six years have passed and the Special Administrative Region
is suffering substantial economic downturn, and its autonomy and political
freedom are in question.
