Pakistan: Referendum on the President

April 30 referendum

President Pervez Musharraf is seeking five more years in office through a controversial referendum. The military ruler has vowed a return to democracy and has said he will not stay in power if the people vote against him.

His support for the U.S.-led war against terror has won him allies around the world but fuelled domestic opposition. Musharraf seized power in a bloodless coup in 1999 suspending the constitution.
